... Consider the significance of Act 1 Scene 2 to the play as a whole Hamlet was the first great tragedy of Shakespeare and was an immediate success in the theatres. This essay will be based on Act 1 Scene 2 of Shakespeare's Hamlet. In this essay I will be addressing the characters, themes and the imagery of the play. The first Act in Hamlet is set in the dark and there are guards outside the castle. There is much tension in this scene and then the guards see the ghost of Old King Hamlet but just as they try to speak to the ghost it disappears. Horatio arrives. The ghost appears again and this time Horatio sees it, now the guards will be believed about the sighting of the ghost. Then day light comes (end of Act 1 Scene 1).
