... Hamlet Essay In this essay I intend to analyse how William Shakespeare introduces the themes of betrayal and revenge in Act 1 of Hamlet. Hamlet is the most famous of all of Shakespeare's plays. He wrote it around 1601 just after he had finished Julius Caesar, which was about betrayal, so the theme was clearly still on his mind. Hamlet follows the structure of a traditional revenge tragedy. It starts with a ghost, King Hamlet, bringing a motive for revenge. His motive is that he was murdered in his sleep by his brother Claudius, who went on to take the throne and his wife. The avenger, Hamlet, then plans his revenge. Hamlet then confronts Claudius on the murder. Hamlet then hesitates with his plan to get revenge, and finally completes his revenge, getting himself killed in the process.
