William Shakespeare Explored

About Shakespeare.

William Shakespeare was born in England in 1564 and lived through the reign of Queen Elizabeth the First. He died at the age of 52 and was famous for having written some of the greatest plays in English. His works are performed on stages around the world and many have been made into films. His ideas have been used in musicals, teenage romances and samurai movies. His genius and mysterious life have lead to weird and wonderful theories about where he learnt so much, hidden messages in his work and even whether he really was the author.

Shakespeare for GCSE English Literature: What Will I Study?

William Shakespeare was an actor who wrote plays and poetry. Some students will look at his sonnets as part of the poetry section of GCSE English Literature. Everyone has to study one of his plays - the most popular being "Romeo and Juliet", "Macbeth", "Julius Caesar" and "The Merchant of Venice". As Shakespeare lived four hundred years ago the style of English that he used is often tricky to understand. A good study guide is useful to help you decipher his meaning.

Part of many GCSE English Literature courses involves commenting on film or TV adaptations of Shakespeare's plays. This can be a great way of sorting out the story and analysing the characters, but be aware that bits are often left out to make the film short enough. Most schools will take their students to see a production of Shakespeare in a theatre. This should help with those "how would an audience respond to ...?" questions.

Shakespeare... What Can I Study Next?

A Level English Literature will give you the chance to study another Shakespeare play. You could choose to do your project on Elizabethan England if you're doing GCSE History. Drama students could pull on their tights and show us their Bottoms (old "Midsummer Night's Dream" joke!).

Recent Reviews of William Shakespeare Essays

What our users think of the William Shakespeare essays in this section:

"A good attempt at answering the main question, but improvements need to be made. An informative introduction, stating the ways in which Macbeth's character changes throughout the play. There is some explainations of the quotes, however some deeper language analysis needed - for example, when explaining the quote 'brave Macbeth', you simply state 'we know he is brave'. An ok conclusion, which sums up the points in the essay. Your essay is lacking slightly in length, and many of your points need to be expanded on. TSR User: boosh_slayer"

"An excellent introduction, which introduces the play and contains some good historical background information. Your analysis of Macbeth's soliloquy is very detailed, and you have explored the meaning behind it and commented on some of the language . You've described some excellent stage direction, which would be very effective if it was to be performed. A short, but simple conclusion, outlining the main theme of the essay. "Quite a good piece of work, discussing the character of Lady Macbeth and her role in the play. You have written a fairly good introduction, which sets up the essay nicely. Some interesting points have been made and they have been developed quite well. You have commented briefly on some language techniques that Shakespeare uses, which shows you have an understanding of the text. Also, you have included a very nice conclusion, summing up the essay. Some deeper language is needed, to gain a higher mark, personally. Overall, it lacks a little length, but you've covered numerous points regarding Lady Macbeth. TSR User: boosh_slayer"

"A short, but fairly good piece of work. Good quotes have been used, and you have also made a reference to where they are in the play. Also, a very good conclusion, showing you have an understanding of the play and the two characters. You seem to be making some sort of conclusion about Lady Macbeth and the witches in the introduction, without any reasoning whatsoever. Also, your first paragraph is a little jumbled, and in the third line you discuss Lady Macbeth's death - which seems rather early in the essay. TSR User: boosh_slayer"
