William Shakespeare Explored

About Shakespeare.

William Shakespeare was born in England in 1564 and lived through the reign of Queen Elizabeth the First. He died at the age of 52 and was famous for having written some of the greatest plays in English. His works are performed on stages around the world and many have been made into films. His ideas have been used in musicals, teenage romances and samurai movies. His genius and mysterious life have lead to weird and wonderful theories about where he learnt so much, hidden messages in his work and even whether he really was the author.

Shakespeare for GCSE English Literature: What Will I Study?

William Shakespeare was an actor who wrote plays and poetry. Some students will look at his sonnets as part of the poetry section of GCSE English Literature. Everyone has to study one of his plays - the most popular being "Romeo and Juliet", "Macbeth", "Julius Caesar" and "The Merchant of Venice". As Shakespeare lived four hundred years ago the style of English that he used is often tricky to understand. A good study guide is useful to help you decipher his meaning.

Part of many GCSE English Literature courses involves commenting on film or TV adaptations of Shakespeare's plays. This can be a great way of sorting out the story and analysing the characters, but be aware that bits are often left out to make the film short enough. Most schools will take their students to see a production of Shakespeare in a theatre. This should help with those "how would an audience respond to ...?" questions.

Shakespeare... What Can I Study Next?

A Level English Literature will give you the chance to study another Shakespeare play. You could choose to do your project on Elizabethan England if you're doing GCSE History. Drama students could pull on their tights and show us their Bottoms (old "Midsummer Night's Dream" joke!).

"A good introduction is included, with some interesting background information about Shakespeare's time. The directing of the scene is very detailed, and the reader can easily imagine this going on on stage. Excellent quotes have been used, but maybe there could have been some comments on how the words were spoken - not just about how the character behaved. In the essay, it does state that the play was written in the seventeenth century, and therefore the directing would have been very different compared to nowadays - but you could expand on this and give a few examples of how the play could have been directed back in Shalkespeare's time. A stonger ending to the essay would also be an improvement. Overall, this is a great piece of directing. TSR User: boosh_slayer"
