Compare The Importance of Being Earnest and Once A Catholic The Importance of Being Ernest is very humorous play which manages to make a profound commentary on money, marriage, image and status, as it pertains to the aristocracy of that time. This play was set in 1895, and is based in London. The story revolves around the antics of two friends with imaginary acquaintances whom they use to escape family commitments. Both men are in love with girls who will only marry a man named, Ernest. And as time goes on, they find them selves in great confusion when one (Algernon) chooses to make the other's (Jack's) fake brother into a reality. Algernon visits Jack's country estate while playing the role and embarrassment, misunderstanding and temporary anger is the inevitable outcome.
