Have a little read: ... The Role and Function of the Inspector in "An Inspector Calls" The Inspector is a mysterious character. When asked anything about himself except his name he replies with things such as, "I haven't much time" or "that is not relevant". What the audience knows about the inspector at the end of the play is exactly the same as what is known about him at the beginning. Every other character in the play evolves, develops and changes during the course of the play but the Inspector does not. The Inspector's duty is to investigate the death of Eva Smith and he is able to do this extremely well. The main thing that is suspicious about the Inspector is that Eva was only meant to have died a couple of hours ago and yet the Inspector has managed to collect a well of information on the subject that would impress even the most
