... How does Priestley use the character of Mr. Birling in Act 1 of "An Inspector Calls" to persuade the audience that socialism, not conservatism is the political party the should support? J.B Priestley is the author of the play 'An Inspector Calls', which was set in 1912, despite being written during the Second World War and not performed until 1946. The play was not written for entertainment alone, it was also written for political purposes, this is because Priestley was a socialist and therefore interested in changing society. He was particularly interested in the 1945 election, which was taking place whilst he was writing the play. Being a socialist -along with other socialist writers such as HG Wells and George Benson Shaw- he wanted to try and persuade his audience to give their support to the labour party, and not a conservative party.
