How does Arthur Miller utilise the character of Alfieri to contribute to the dramatic effect of A View from the Bridge? Arthur Miller was born in 1915, New York City. His parents were both immigrants into the United States. His family lived in prosperity due to the success of his fathers business. This manufacturing business soon collapsed forcing miller to work as a warehouseman. Miller studied economics and history at university but also followed a playwriting course which soon became his primary ambition. A View from the Bridge has its roots in the late 1940's; he based this play on a story by his young lawyer friend. She mentioned a story he'd recently heard of a longshoreman who had ratted to the immigration bureau on two brothers.
