"Welcome to flight 753 to Osaka, Japan. We hope you enjoy your flight," an airline worker amicably exclaims. You stand in front of a drab hallway. From a distance, the airplane obtains the appearance of a gigantic white dove with colorful tail feathers, gigantic wings retrofitted with cylindrical engines, and crystal-clear windows allow people to veer inside the bird. The airplane perches on an expanse of concrete earth. Connected to the plane is dark tubing that connects from the bird to the airport like an umbilical cord. You walk casually into the entrance. Inside, the passage is narrow and uninteresting. Ash-colored moss covers the floor from the gateway to the plane. The same lifeless moss blankets the walls and ceiling and surfaces the entire hall in patches of lead. The ceiling carries rectangular fluorescent lights that only enhance the dullness of the passage. A dry, clean, hospital-like smell permeates every square...
