Explore the way conflict is portrayed in Act III, Scene v. Consider the social and historical context, Shakespeare's use of language and the dramatic impact on the audience. The position on men and women in the times when this play was written (Elizabethan times) were very different to the one we have these days. The husband was seen as the ruler of the family, making all of the important decisions independently. The husband was seen as far greater than then wife in a family, this was believed because Adam was created first, then Eve from his body. Women that were independent were seen as un-natural. This is strongly reflected in Romeo and Juliet. In the scene after Capulet uses verbal and physical threats and leaves Juliet turns to her mother.
