Media Coursework Q. Analyse and comment on the effectiveness of the media devices used to present war in sections of "Braveheart" and "Saving Private Ryan". This essay coursework is on the media devices used in Braveheart and Saving Private Ryan. Both of these films are set in the past. Saving Private Ryan is set in the Second World War, during the allied assault in northern France. Braveheart is set in the 13th century where the British fight the Scottish. Both films use many techniques to show the soldiers' emotions and also to control the audience's tension. The first technique I would like to mention is the range of camera angles used. In Saving Private Ryan just before the army lands on the beach there are many close-up shots of the soldiers which show their nervousness.
