Alone in the Darkness I stood at the top of the hill. The wind that blew was cold and sharp, and each breath caught in my throat painfully. It was getting late, the sky was a deep purple, and night was falling quickly. Behind me stood a row of soaring pine trees, standing like guards to the entrance of the field. As the wind caught in their higher branches the trees creaked, sending unnatural shadows to their nests. I was not known for being brave, I was twelve and still slept with the light on, so walking across the lonely, desolate fields was not a decision to be taken lightly. The road was lit by the orange glow of the street lamps, but at that time of year the fields were cast into darkness soon after six thirty, and it was already seven fifteen.
