Compare and Contrast Helen and Jo in " A Taste of Honey" By looking at the language used in "A Taste of Honey" we are able to analyse the two characters Jo and Helen. A seventeen-year-old girl called Shelagh Delaney first wrote the play in the 1950's. At this time England was a racist, homophobic environment and was also post-war. Many people were still grieving from their losses. Delaney uses dialect from North England in the book, a working class, and deprived environment. Language such as ' Give over' and 'You daft thing' is used. Delaney's aim was to create controversy and create a character that is positively different to the usual 1950s bigot. Jo and Helen's relationship is reversed in the roles they take as mother and daughter. Jo seems to be more reliable.
