'Compare Carol Ann Duffy's 'Valentine' to Andrew Marvell's 'To His Coy Mistress.' Illustrate how the attitudes to love are different, taking into account social and historical context. In this essay I will be comparing 'Valentine' by Carol Ann Duffy and 'To His Coy Mistress' by Andrew Marvell. Valentine is Duffy's modern interpretation about the commercialism of Valentines Day. It was written in the 20th Century - a more liberal and diverse time period whereas 'To His Coy Mistress' was written in the 17th Century where morals and social expectations about love were very rigid. 'Valentine' opens up with a topic line, stating the poem will not be an average love poem and will not offer a "red rose" or "satin heart" but instead she gives her lover an onion. At first this seems like an unusual gift but as we interpret her use of metaphor we understand the onion symbolises her love....
