To what extent do you believe A Christmas Carol to be a tale with a moral? Charles Dickens was the foremost English novelist of the Victorian era. He was considered to be one of the English language's greatest writers, and was acclaimed for his rich storytelling and memorable characters, and achieved massive worldwide popularity in his lifetime. Charles Dickens was born in Landport, Portsmouth in Hampshire, the second of eight children to John and Elizabeth Dickens, John was a clerk in the Navy Pay Office at Portsmouth. Although his early years seem to have been idyllic, he seen himself then as a "very small and not-over-particularly-taken-care-of boy". His family was moderately wealthy, and he received some education at the private William Giles' school in Chatham. This time of prosperity came to an abrupt end, however, when his father was imprisoned at Marshalsea debtors' prison. The 12-year-old Dickens began working ten-hour days...
