"1842 a year of lost opportunities for Chartism." Discuss. The year 1842 had many parallels to 1839, a petition was again rejected by the government after lengthy campaigns which clearly achieved nothing and the majority of Chartist leaders ended the year either in prison or facing immediate trial. It is debatable whether it was indeed a year of missed opportunities or if the opportunities were taken, yet unsuccessful. By this point in the campaign the Chartists did appear to be fighting a losing battle. Further complication arose within the Chartists movement when Lovett made his 'New move.' Although under completely different conditions from O'Connor when he spent his year in Warwick Gaol, he was able to write Chartism reiterating his belief that the People's Charter was an essential part of a just society. However this time he had much more of an emphasis on education and the idea of a programme funded...
