After university, she worked in the Caribbean and as a journalist and reporter until she moved to Britain in 1977. She now lives and writes in Sussex. Her first book of poetry was published in 1983, the year she won the Commonwealth Poetry Prize. Grace Nichols also writes novels and complies Poetry anthologies for younger readers.
