How is the atmosphere of mystery and suspense built up in "The signalman" and "The red room?" Both of the stories, "The signalman" and "The red room" show a different way of understand ghost stories, the themes and use of words make you build up more tension and atmosphere. In the story "The signalman", the writer uses various techniques to make the reader feel uncomfortable. Usually in horror scenes, you would think of a haunted house, pale women, and blood however this is portrayed very differently in "the signalman", the steep slopes and darkness of the cutting and the eerie sound of the wind in the wires all help to convey feeling of suspense and tension. The story takes place in and around a deep railway cutting during the 19th century. The signals are controlled by sending telegraph signals up and down the line and communicated to the operator by a system...
