In Chinua Achebe's first novel, Things Fall Apart, the power of traditions on the individual who was raised with them, the community as a whole, and outsiders living in the community who were not raised with these traditions, is part of the foundation of his tale of Igbo culture in Nigeria. If an individual aware of these traditions disobeys them then they can be severely punished and the rest of the village will think them dishonorable because they should have known better. For example, when Okonkwo beats his wife, Ojiugo, during the Week of Peace, he is punished and reprimanded by the priest of the earth goddess because he is "a man who has no respect for [their] gods and ancestors" (22).
