Assignment Question: Title: 'The Drain' (June 1958) Author: Dato' A. Samad Said (1935- ) My critical analysis is based on 'The Drain', Harry Aveling's translation of the Malaysian short story 'Longkang' written by Dato' A. Samad Said. As the saying "Actions speak louder than words", I will endeavor to discuss how one of the main characters embodies this saying. In this story, the character was depicted as a person who obviously knew what should had been done to improve the village but did not act on his own suggestions. Therefore, he actually did not practice what he preached. The story was about the residents in a slum society whose unhygienic conditions had become a way of life. A clogged main drain ran through this little settlement inhabited mostly by the Indian-Muslim community.
