Environmental considerations The textiles industry has an impact on the environment in many ways. The main principles of conserving the environment are: · Avoiding the use of materials that damage the environment · Reducing the consumption of materials · Recycling materials. Life cycle analysis This involves looking at the impact a product has on the environment throughout its life, from manufacture to disposal. Industry can identify where savings can be made in the use of materials and energy. Production of fibres Whilst creating natural fibres not all the processes it includes are environmentally friendly. The land that is used needs to be fertilized and watered; therefore chemicals may be used to protect the plants and animals from disease. The chemical used in each case can contaminate the soil, water and atmosphere. Producing man-made fibres, both synthetic and regenerated, also involves the use of chemicals, which has cost and pollution implications. Industry is reducing the impact on the environment by...
