Anne Sherratt 10n2 13.5.02 P.E Homework It is important for us to eat a healthy balanced diet, as this way the body is provided with energy for exercise and every day life, helps the body fight illness, and keeps the body at the right weight. A balanced diet contains these 7 different nutrients: carbohydrates, proteins, minerals, fats, fibre, vitamins and water. Without these different food types the body would not be able to carry out every activity presented in every day life. Carbohydrates are foods such as fruits (e.g. apples, oranges) vegetables (e.g. carrots, potatoes) bread, butter, milk, cheese, eggs, fish and nuts. Carbohydrates are the main energy providers in a diet as they contain starch sugars and cellulose, the main foods in this group that provide us with starch are bread, potatoes, pasta and rice. If too much carbohydrate is eaten it will be stored, as fat, but the right amount will maintain blood sugar levels. Carbohydrates are converted by the body into glucose and glycogen to fuel our muscles, brain an nervous system. The percentage contribution of carbohydrate is 55%. The average daily intake of carbohydrates for men is 272g, and for women are 193g. Carbohydrates can be digested easily and can provide energy quickly, and is also found in most sweet foods such as cakes, jams, honey, soft drinks, and chocolate bars, as this way sugar can be digested quickly releasing their energy quickly and will boost your energy. This makes carbohydrate foods good for athletes because they are converted quickly into the energy needed to do exercise. This also a reason why carbohydrates are found in cereals made from wheat, maize, corn, oatmeal and rice, as you need something to boost your energy after not eating any food when you are sleeping. As well as being a good energy provider, carbohydrate starch is a major source of heat. If carbohydrates, sugar imparticular, are eaten excessively this could lead to blood sugar disorders such as diabetes. However whole grain foods, fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts and beans are changed into glucose quicker than the other carbohydrates are converted to sugar, meaning that we are supplied with a more long term supply of energy. Proteins are foods such as eggs, meat, fish, green vegetables, milk, cheese and nuts. Proteins help to build and repair cells in the body, and also muscle fibres. Unused protein cannot be stored so you need to have protein
