NUTRITION : HEAD AND NECK ONCOLOGY BY DILRAJ KAUR SEHMI :MPHARM 3 :2004/2005 Introduction On initial presentation of the patients profile it can be said that he should stop smoking and that he is consuming more than the recommended daily amount of alcohol for men. The weight loss of six kilograms within four weeks seems quite sudden and may be indicative of a serious underlying problem. An ulcer on the tongue may not be very serious though the fact that it has persisted for a long time is worrying. The additional fact that he has a small lump in his neck points to a possible tumour. Alcohol increases the risk of mouth, pharynx, larynx, oesophageal and colorectal cancers occurring. The risk is increased in smokers. Diet has been implicated in the causation and prevention of cancer therefore whatever information obtained regarding his dietary intake will have a marked impact on the patients post diagnosis...
