Michael Au World Issues April 8, 2004 Fast Food Nation: Chapters 5-7 Summary 1. Frozen french fries accelerated the fast food industry and changed the nation's eating habits. Potatoes have always been a large part of America's diet. Americans only consume more dairy products and wheat flour. In fact, today, French fries have become the most widely sold foodservice item in the United States. In 1960, the typical America ate 81 pounds of fresh potatoes and 4 pounds of frozen French fries. Today, the ratio has gone up to 49 pounds of fresh potatoes and 30 pounds of French fires. Ninety percent of these frozen French fries are purchased at fast food restaurants. 2. Production of frozen french fries has become intense competitive business and the huge profits made from these sales have barely reached farmers.
