Running head: Cultural Variance Cultural Variance In Food Preparation: Health Benefits and Pitfalls Ricky Myint Manhattanville College Throughout history there have been two factors that have contributed to the essence of any given culture's cuisine: the main method of food preparation and the staple of the respective culture's diet. These two seemingly simple factors shape the culture as well as the overall health of any given culture around the globe. For example, here in America the red-meat intake along with copious amounts of fried and fast food make for a culture whose waistline expands alongside the statistics for obesity and coronary disease. In a recent study published by the American Medical Association (2000), the discussion of obesity led to the conclusion that "More than half of adult Americans are overweight or obese, and public health recommendations call for weight loss in those who are overweight with associated medical conditions who are obese."
