About GCSE Design and Technology

What used to be just metalwork, needlework or cookery has been combined to make up GCSE DT. The practical part is still there, but you'll also learn about design, product research and marketing.

GCSE Design and Technology: What Will I Study?

GCSE DT courses are usually divided up into resistant materials (wood, metal, plastics and ceramics), graphics (text and packaging design), electronics, textiles and food technology. Systems and control means looking at how machines work. Most schools offer a GCSE using one or two of these areas. GCSE DT involves examining materials and existing products and using this knowledge to help you design your own project. Examples of commonly set projects are designing a wooden toy, building an electronic advertising sign or cooking and packaging a healthy snack.

GCSE Design and Technology will need you to sketch ideas, use computers and to develop your hands-on, practical skills.

GCSE DT... What Comes Next?

If you want to be a carpenter, chef, electrician or fashion designer, then GCSE DT is a good starting point. Most FE colleges offer vocational courses like BTECs to take you further, and then there's degree courses in industrial design, art and engineering to consider if you want to go to university.

"This is an excellent evaluation of your work, and it is very clear what you have had to do. You have obviously taken into account numerous factors regarding your logo, and many of your paragraphs are detailed. Your language is very sophisticated, and it is clear that you have taken this project seriously and really considered what needs to be done. Overall, this is a good evaluation. To end your evaluation, you could have stated what you have learnt from this piece of work, and also including the logo at the bottom would have been interesting for readers such as myself. "This is a good piece of work, which successfully describes the main process of how a logo is designed and made for a company of business. Excellent information regarding the nature of a logo and how important it is to a company. The description of the process of making the logo is very detailed and informative. The fonts which were stated at the start of the document could have been analysed in greater detail, instead of having just one short comment about each - the font of a logo is exteremly important, and so it must be chosen very carefully. "There is a very informative introduction to this piece of writing, and the main information regarding the work experience placement is stated very clearly. The different sections of the piece of writing are all very detailed include all the need information. An honest description of the work that was undertaken and details of the activities which the person had to do are included in the essay. An insight into how this work placement has affected and changed the person is also included in the conclusion; where an honest overall report of the experience has also been recorded. To improve, some more description about any problems that occured might be useful. TSR User: boosh_slayer"
