About GCSE Design and Technology
What used to be just metalwork, needlework or cookery has been combined to make up GCSE DT. The practical part is still there, but you'll also learn about design, product research and marketing.
GCSE Design and Technology: What Will I Study?
GCSE DT courses are usually divided up into resistant materials (wood, metal, plastics and ceramics), graphics (text and packaging design), electronics, textiles and food technology. Systems and control means looking at how machines work. Most schools offer a GCSE using one or two of these areas. GCSE DT involves examining materials and existing products and using this knowledge to help you design your own project. Examples of commonly set projects are designing a wooden toy, building an electronic advertising sign or cooking and packaging a healthy snack.
GCSE Design and Technology will need you to sketch ideas, use computers and to develop your hands-on, practical skills.
GCSE DT... What Comes Next?
If you want to be a carpenter, chef, electrician or fashion designer, then GCSE DT is a good starting point. Most FE colleges offer vocational courses like BTECs to take you further, and then there's degree courses in industrial design, art and engineering to consider if you want to go to university.
