Ashlee Mercer Professor L.B. Johnson Humanities 202 18 November 2004 Positive Influence's in Things Fall Apart There have been three characters that have had a positive influence on Okonkwo. For Okonkwo, Obierika in many cases has stood for the voice of reason. Nwakibie has helped guide and gain the respect of Okonkwo. Uchendu welcomed Okonkwo to the land of Mbanta, and helped him and his family adjust to living in exile. While several clansmen of the Umuofian and Mbanta tribe viewed Okonkwo as a negative person, Obrieika, Nwakibie, and Uchendu have been the three individuals to constantly have a positive influence on Okonkwo despite his imperfections. Obierika, who is Okonkwo's best friend, whose personality often contrasts with and enhances the distinctive characteristics of Okonkwo's attitude. Obierika is receptive to new ideas and is willing to adapt to change, whereas Okonkwo is very narrow-minded, unable to accept any changes to traditional ways.
