At the start of the play the two sisters, Antigone and Ismene, are talking. Antigone wants to bury her brother, Polynices. Ismene says that's she does not want to disobey King Creon. Antigone then exits to carry out the act. From this first scene we can tell that Antigone is a lot more confident and headstrong compared to Ismene, even though they are both women in a male dominated society. The Chorus then tells the audience about the war between the two brothers, Eteocles and Polynices. The war was over which brother should rule the city of Thebes. The two brother's army's fight and both brothers end up dieing leaving the throne open to Creon. Creon states his laws to the Theban elders: the law says Polynices is not to be buried because Polynices "came back from exile intending to burn and destroy his fatherland and the Gods of his fatherland"....
