Thursday 28th February 2008 Mr. Davison Sulphur cross experiment Sulphur cross experiment Aim Measure how much time takes for sodium thiosulphate and hydrochloric acid to acquire a cloudy color and do not allow the cross underneath to be visible. Repeating the experiment three times per different temperature, (increased by 10°) we made sure it was a fair test. Prediction The higher the temperature is, the less time it will take the sodium thiosulphate and hydrochloric acid to react. The activation energy (minimum amount of energy required to initiate reaction) will affect the time for reaction to happen but will not make a great difference in results. Fair test Controlled * Amount of sodium thiosulphate * Amount of hydrochloric acid Dependent * Temperature of sodium thiosulphate Independent * Time taken Apparatus 1. Flask 2. Measuring cylinders 3. Container 4. Sodium thiosulphate (10cm³) 5. Hydrochloric acid (10cm³) 6. Paper with a cross 7. Stopwatch 8. Thermometer 9. Bunsen burner 10. Tripod 11. Lighter 12.
