GCSE CHEMISTRY COURSEWORK-EPSOM SALTS AIM:- To see how changing a certain variable affects the rate of the reaction RESEARCH:- Epsom Salts is common name for a colourless or white crystalline salt (magnesium sulfate hepta-hydrate, MgSO4·7H2O) found in the minerals kieserite and epsomite and in mineral waters. Epsom salt was first prepared at Epsom, England. The salt has a bitter taste. It is used in medicine as a cathartic, in hypertonic baths to reduce swelling, and in dyeing as a color fixative. (Source: Microsoft(r) Encarta(r) 98 Encyclopedia. (c) 1993-1997 Microsoft Corporation.) The Collision theory explains how chemical reactions occur and why rates of reaction differ. For a reaction to occur, particles must collide. If the collision causes a chemical change it is referred to as a fruitful collision. The theory explains how chemical reactions take place and why rates of reaction alter. For a reaction to occur the reactant particles must collide. Only a certain fraction...
