Chemistry Course Work Acid and Limestone Reaction Aim: To find out how the concentration of hydrochloric acid affects the rate of reaction between hydrochloric acid and calcium carbonate (limestone) Theory: For a reaction to take place two particles must collide. In order to do this they must overcome an energy barrier called activation energy, which is the minimum amount of energy that they must collide with in order for a reaction to occur. The more collisions there are the quicker the reaction will be. He particles also have to collide with the correct orientation and must fit together, this is called the 'lock and key' theory The two molecules must fit together when they collide to form a complex. Increasing the surface area will also increase the rate of reaction.
