Chemistry Investigation Aim To determine the effect of concentration on the rate of reaction between marble and hydrochloric acid. Method A burette was filled with 50cm³ of hydrochloric acid. This was put into a conical flask, and 5 grams of small marble pieces were dropped in. Immediately, a bung attached to a gas syringe was put into the top of the conical flask, and a stopwatch was started. After 1.5 minutes the volume of gas in the syringe was measured. The experiment was repeated, but 40cm³ of hydrochloric acid and 10cm³ of water was used instead. The experiment was done again and again until the measurements were 10cm³ of hydrochloric acid and 40cm³ of water. The experiments were repeated afterwards to increase accuracy.
