Plan: Aim: To alter the rate at which diluted hydrochloric acid reacts with magnesium by varying the concentration of the diluted hydrochloric acid. This is the equation for the reaction that I am investigating: Mg(s) + 2HCl(aq) ==> MgCl2(aq) + H2(g) Magnesium + Hydrochloric acid ==> Magnesium chloride + Hydrogen Collision theory for rates of reaction The particles of the reacting substances must collide with each other and a fixed amount of energy called the activation energy must be reached if the reaction is to take place. If the particles can produce sufficient energy (i.e. if they collide fast enough and in the right direction) a reaction will occur. Not all collisions will result in a reaction. Several factors affect the rate at which the reactants are changed into products: Concentration The more concentrated the reactants, the greater will be the rate of reaction.
