The develpoment of poly(ethene) and poly(propene) One way in which polymers are formed is through addition polymerisation. This reaction is the construction of a polymer based upon simple units called monomers which join together to form polymer chains. This can only happen under the correct temperature and pressure. In the polymerisation of ethene produces poly(ethene) commonly known as polythene. There are three stages of polymerisation, the first stage is called initiation, in which benzoyl peroxide is the initiator and its O-O bond breaks homiletically, making two radicals which begin the reaction. R = a group of particles * = a free radical R-O-O-R ==> R-O* + R-O* The next stage is propagation in which one radical splits the carbon double bond in the ethane and replaces it with a single bond.
