Rates of reaction The aim of this experiment is to find out how different variables affect the rate at which the reaction between Marble chips (CaCO3) and Hydrochloric acid (HCl) takes place. There are many variables that affect the rate of this reaction such as the following: 1. Temperature 2. Concentration (Pressure for gases) 3. Catalyst 4. Surface area (sizes of particles) Background information We will be investigation how concentration affects the rate of reaction we will be reacting calcium carbonate and hydrochloric acid. To make this a fair test we will have to keep all variables the same except the one we are investigating. The products of the reaction between calcium carbonate and hydrochloric acid are calcium chloride and carbon dioxide and water. To measure the rate of reaction we will be measuring the volume of carbon dioxide produced. The size of the marble chips available will be small, large and medium.
