The Effect Of Changing Concentration On Rate Of Reaction Introduction When sodium thiosulphate and hydrochloric acid are mixed, a yellow precipitate of sulphur is produced. The solution becomes increasingly difficult to see through as more and more sulphur is formed. + + + + The rate of reaction can be can be followed by recording the time taken for a given amount of sulphur to be precipitated. This can be done by placing a conical flask containing a mixture of sodium thiosulphate and hydrochloric acid onto a cross on a piece of paper. As the amount of sulphur increases, the cross becomes more and more difficult to see and finally disappears from view. The time taken for this to occur is a measure of the rate of this reaction.
