Chemistry Assessed Practical (Skill E) The Calculation of an equilibrium constant The experiment that we did was and esterification, a reaction between ethanoic acid and ethanol to produce ethyl ethanoate. CH3COOH + C2H5OH -->CH3COOC2H5 + H2O This solution was made up and left in a cupboard, undisturbed for 7 days. We then took several 1 cm3 samples and titrated them with NaOH. This would determine the amount of moles of acid in the solution, which include the carboxylic acid left at equilibrium and the HCl which was added to the solution at the start to catalyse the reaction.
