ALKYL HALIDES Purpose: To study the reaction of alkyl halides and compare these reactions with the reaction of aryl halide. The experiment was performed to assess the reactivity of alkyl and aryl halides by Sn1 and Sn2 mechanism and also to determine the rates of reaction between alkyl and aryl halides. Sodium iodide in acetone and silver nitrate in ethanol solution was used to determine the reactivity of a reaction by Sn2 and Sn1 mechanism respectively and the formation of precipitation indicated the rate of reaction between alkyl and aryl halide. PART - A Reaction of alkyl and aryl halides with sodium iodide in acetone All of the reactants (chlorobenzene, chlorodiphenylmethane, 1-chlorobutane, 2-chlorobutane, 2-chloro-2-methylpropane) and sodium iodide in acetone solution used in this experiment was white and liquid at room temperature. The halides that reacted with sodium iodide did so by Sn2 mechanism due to the nature of the reagent. The...
