Katie Wilson Rates of Reaction There are four factors that affect rates of reaction, and we can use any one of these factors to increase or decrease the rate of reaction. The four factors are; Surface Area, The surface area of a solid is the area of it which is exposed. If the solid is cut up into smaller pieces, more surface is exposed which means it can react faster. Temperature, At higher temperatures, particles are moving around faster. They collide more often and with more energy. This means that the reaction occurs more quickly. Concentration, Concentrated fluids react more quickly than dilute ones, in a concentrated solution there are more collisions per second between the reacting particles, so the reaction occurs more quickly. Catalysts, Catalysts enable substances to react more easily. They do this by helping bonds between atoms to break and form more easily. The particles need less energy to react, so the...
