Rates of Reaction Aim: To investigate how changing one factor affects the rate of reaction between magnesium and hydrochloric acid. The factors that can change the rate of reaction are * Temperature * Concentration of Acid * Surface Area * Addition of a Catalyst Increasing these factors increases the rate of reaction. This is because for a reaction to occur Hydrochloric acid particles must collide with the Magnesium. When you increase the Temperature more heat is given to the particles and so they have more Kinetic energy. Therefore the acid particles are moving faster and the amount of collisions with the Magnesium particles in a given time are increased. When you increase the concentration there will be more Hydrochloric Acid particles in the Solution. This means that there will be more acid particles to collide with the Magnesium particles.
