Investigating the effect of Catalase on Hydrogen Peroxide Introduction: Catalase is an enzyme that is found in animals and plants, it is important because it breaks down peroxides, which are highly toxic bleaches, that are bi-products of respiration in cells, and so these peroxides need to be broken down quickly before they do any damage to the bodies cells. The reaction that takes place has the equation: 2H²O² Catalase 2H²O + O² Hydrogen Peroxide Catalase Water + Oxygen Hypothesis: The variables that can be altered to affect the rate of reaction are: Temperature, this will double the rate of reaction every 10ºC it increases, BUT will stop after 50ºC, this is because the shape of the enzymes will change to perform different functions, which aren't to break peroxides.
