Investigating Reaction Rates Planning Experimental Procedures The reaction rate is a measure of how fast or slow a reaction is. It can be found by first measuring the amount of reactant used per unit of time or the amount of product produced per unit of time. Once you have the time it is easy to find out the rate. All you need to do is divide one by the time. Reaction = _____1_____ Rate Time The reaction rate is measured in units of S-1 or 1/S (where S is Seconds). Reaction Rates are affected by different factors. Some of these are: 1. Surface area of the reactants 2. Temperature of the reaction 3. The concentration of the reactants. The surface area of the reactants increases the reaction rate because there will be an increased amount of collisions (with enough activation energy) between the reactants and so the reaction takes less time.
