Rates of Reaction Investigation 07/04/2002 Aim To investigate what factors effect the rate of reaction between zinc and hydrochloric acid, and further to determine the effect of the HCl concentration as one of these factors. Method In trying to measure the effect of the concentration of HCl on the rate of reaction, I intend to put a specific (unvarying) mass of zinc into a beaker containing a specific concentration of HCl. By measuring the amount of Hydrogen released using a burette, it should be possible to calculate the rate of reaction. I can repeat the experiment for different concentrations of HCl, and thus compare the results. To keep the experiment fair, I will keep the masses, surface areas, temperature, pH, and equipment the same. The reaction follows according to the formula: Zn(s) + 2HCl(aq) ?
