Biology Coursework Aim: To investigate the effect of caffeine on a person's reaction time. Hypothesis: I predict that caffeine will decrease a person's reaction time by a very noticeable amount. I believe that the more caffeine a person consumes, the shorter their reaction time will be. They will be able to respond to a stimulus faster. Prediction: The reaction time will decrease because of the increase of speed of neurotransmitters in the body. The presence of caffeine in a person's body increases the levels of calcium along the nerve synapse. There is a decrease in reaction time because neurotransmitter substances need calcium to be released. Vesicles carry the neurotransmitters, and calcium causes the vesicles to move from the centre of the pre-synaptic ganglion to the pre-synaptic membrane and fuse with it and the vesicles release the transmitters into the synaptic cleft.
