How does the Rate of Reaction between Calcium Carbonate (Marble Chips) and Hydrochloric Acid vary with the concentration of the Acid? Introduction I am investigating the rate of reaction between Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3) and Hydrochloric Acid (HCl), when the amount of HCl is varied. The rate of reaction is the time taken from when the CaCO3 and the HCl are added together and the chemical reaction takes place and CO2 is released. There are 4 main factors which can affect the rate at which a reaction can occur, they are; the surface area of the solid reactant, the temperature of the liquid reactant, the concentration or strength of the acid being used (measured in moles) and the presence or absence of a catalyst (a catalyst is a substance which speeds up a reaction). The factor, in association with rate of reaction, which I have chosen to investigate, is the changing concentrations of Hydrochloric acid....
