Chemistry Coursework Background Theory of Chemical Reaction It is said that when two or more substances are reacted chemically, a chemical reaction has taken place. In any substances there are many small particles which we cannot see, and they are moving around at a steady speed. A chemical reaction can only occur when different substances are mixed together, and when different particles meet and collide with each other with sufficient energy. Usually substances when on their own will not react because there are no other particles to meet, bump or collide against each other and therefore no chemical reaction will take place. This is known as the collision theory, and the minimum amount of energy the particles are required to have so that they can collide with each other for a chemical reaction to take place is called the activation energy.
