SKILL AREA P: PLANNING EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Scientific Background Reaction rates go at different speeds or rates, for example a very slow reaction is rusting, a moderate reaction would be magnesium and acid producing a gentle stream of bubbles and a fast reaction would be caesium and water. Reaction rates can be measured by the production of a product (e.g. a colour change) or the disappearance of a reactant (e.g. weight loss in a marble chip). A reaction rate can be changed in a number of ways: 1. Varying the concentration 2. Varying the temperature 3. Changing the surface area 4. Adding a catalyst Relationship between concentration and reaction rate If a solution becomes more concentrated it means there are more particles of the reactant knocking about between the water molecules, so collisions are more likely.
