Background Information: Enzymes are biological catalysts that change the rate of a chemical reaction without being changed itself. They are found in both plants and animals as they are used for chemical breakdown, which involves the use of enzymes to break down the chemical bonds in food, which forms molecular sizes. Each enzyme is specific as it has a certain job to do, for example, the enzyme pepsin is a protease, and it breaks proteins down to polypeptides. Catalase is an enzyme found in all living plant and animal cells. Hydrogen peroxide is a toxic substance made in the cells of our liver as a by-product, and if not removed immediately it can be quite harmful. Catalase breaks down the hydrogen peroxide into oxygen and water, which are harmless.
