27/01/2002 Ismail Enthalpy changes on displacement and the reactivity series Plan Aim: To find out that the enthalpy change of a displacement reaction between a metal and a solution of acid is related to the relative position of the two metals in the reactivity series Apparatus: * 6 Strips (1 for each set of results) of zinc metal. * 50cm³ (300cm³ altogether for 3 sets of results for each experiment) of copper sulphate (CuSO4) solution. * 50cm³ (300cm³ altogether for 3 sets of results for each experiment) of lead nitrate (Pb(NO3)2 ) solution. * 6 (1 for each set of results) thermometers. * Beaker. * Stop watch. * Polystyrene lid to put on top of beaker (with 2 holes for thermometer & stirring rod). * Lagging jacket (made from polystyrene) insulation around beaker. * Stirring rod. Method: Add 50cm³ of copper sulphate solution into beaker. Cover the beaker with lagging jacket insulation and put the polystyrene lid on top of the beaker, a thermometer and a stirring...
